Amethyst is an extremely powerful and protective stone. Humans have been attracted to the deep, dark purples of amethyst for thousands of years. I go in depth on amethyst meaning, its benefits, the different types of amethyst, and how to program and take care of it.
According to the International Gem Society , The Greeks thought amethyst would stop drunkenness due to its rich wine color. Christians believed it could “aid the healing of wounds” and “Ancient Egyptians worked amethysts into amulets as both a form of prayer and protection against harm.”
Amethyst varies in color from a deep, dark purple to light lavender. It can appear transparent, as pointed crystals, a geode, a cluster or a single point and it comes in all sizes. From a small crystal to geodes that can be several feet in length.
Amethyst crystals are one of the most common which makes them relatively inexpensive.
They’re mined all over the world including the United States, Britain, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, East Africa, Siberia, and India.
Amethyst Meaning & Benefits
Amethyst has many benefits and uses. It can cover almost everything, which makes it an extremely important crystal to have. It’s like the swiss army knife of crystals or like the lavender of essential oils. It covers most things.
They have high vibrations and therefore are very powerful stones.
Amethyst Stone Benefits For Protection
Wearing amethyst will shield you from negative energy of others by keeping a high vibrational energy around you like a shield.
When you’re feeling tired, emotional, doubtful, mentally strained, or physically tired, it can leave you vulnerable to psychic attack. Wearing amethyst will reduce this risk.
Amethyst Stone Benefits For Stress
Amethyst is great for reducing stress and putting you in a tranquil state. It blocks geopathic stress and can bring deep peace of mind, body and spirit to put you in a state of relaxation. It helps you tune out noise from the outside world so you can experience inner calm.
If you’ve been running around town all day doing errands, being stuck in traffic and feel like you just need a little quiet time to recharge, amethyst can help you get some peace and quiet.
Amethyst Stone Benefits For Spirituality
Amethyst is known as the stone of spirituality and is commonly used in meditation, energy work and connecting to your higher self or the other side.
It’s used as a protective stone when connecting to the other side or doing deep energy work to protect against unwanted energies.
The deep purple color of amethyst represents the Third Eye Chakra which is an energy center in the middle of your forehead. This chakra affects your intuition, psychic ability and your higher self.
Amethyst is good for meditation, because it helps you calm the chatter in your mind, connects you to your intuition which can help guide you on your path.
Amethyst Stone Benefits For Sleep
If you have trouble sleeping, place amethyst under your pillow, near your bed or wear a bracelet while you sleep to help with insomnia caused by an overactive mind and nightmares. It emits a tranquil vibration to help you sleep and stay asleep.
Amethyst Stone Benefits For The Mind
In February my husband got me a large Amethyst geode for my birthday. I moved it around the house a few times to see where I liked it most. When I added it to my office, it stayed, because it helped me focus and feel calm and relaxed while I worked.
It’s calming but stimulating so you can block out distractions and get more work done. It helps you feel less scattered, more focused and in control.
It’s great if you work in a creative field or need to problem solve, because it enhances your ability to come up with new ideas and to make decisions.
Cognitively, amethyst is great for improving your memory, motivation and ability to complete goals. I highly recommend wearing amethyst while working or keeping an amethyst crystal in your work space.
Types of Amethyst And Their Meanings
In addition to the properties of amethyst above there are other types of amethyst that have additional benefits.
Black Amethyst Meaning
Black amethyst is good for empaths, because it can help protect their energy from the overwhelming emotions of others and social situations that are draining.
It gets its dark color from hematite and iron inclusions inside the crystal matrix. The presence of hematite and iron give this amethyst a very grounding energy.
Pink Amethyst Meaning
Pink amethyst is found in Patagonia, Argentina and ranges in color from a pale lilac/pink to a peachy pink. The color is from inclusions of hematite.
The color of pink amethyst allows you to connect both to your heart chakra and your third eye chakra. It can open your heart and guide your soul to divine love and acceptance.
Chevron Amethyst Meaning
Chevron amethyst is a combination of milky quartz and amethyst in a “v” striped pattern. The milky quartz enhances the vibration of the amethyst making it a powerful third-eye stimulator. It enhances psychic ability, visions, intuition and out of body journeys. It’s an aura cleanser and has a strong healing field.
Pineapple Amethyst Meaning
Pineapple amethyst grows in clusters and often resembles a pineapple. It’s also called spirit quartz, cactus quartz, porcupine quartz and even barnacle amethyst.
It gets its many names, because it usually contains one large crystal that has a faceted point surrounded by small, equally shaped clusters.
Pineapple amethyst is fairytale like and stimulates the imagination, creativity and play.
How To Use Your Amethyst Crystals
As I described above, amethyst can be used for many things. It’s a powerful, protective stone, it can connect you to your intuition, higher self, reduce stress, help you focus, clear your mind and be more productive.
What can you do to experience all of the wonderful benefits of amethyst? Keep it near you. I have a large amethyst in my office and it feels good just to be around it.
To get more out your amethyst crystals, you can program them with an intention. This focuses its energy on helping you for a specific purpose. Here’s how.
How To Program Your Amethyst Crystals
When you program a crystal or your healing crystal jewelry you are setting an intention for it. Doing so, puts energy towards manifesting what you want and is a very powerful tool.
You can set an intention for it to protect you from negative energy, to help you sleep better, to release stress, to help you focus among many other things.
Step One – Identify How You Want To Use Your Amethyst
First identify how you want to use your amethyst. Do you want to use it for protection from unwanted energy, for better sleep, etc..
Step Two – Cleanse Your Amethyst Crystal
Cleanse your crystals and healing crystal jewelry with moonlight, selenite, smoke or sound.
I go into detail on how to cleanse and charge crystals in this post here.
Step Three – Program Your Amethyst Crystal
- Hold the crystal or healing crystal jewelry in your hand and picture light surrounding it.
- Think about what you want to use it for and imagine it. For example, if you want to use it to release stress, imagine yourself relaxed and at peace.
- When you feel ready, say out loud three times, “I program this crystal for [stress relief]”. Then wear it or place it somewhere you can see it frequently.
Amethyst Crystal Intentions
If you’re not sure what to say when you program your amethyst, here’s a few intentions you can use. Making up your own are just as powerful too.
Amethyst Affirmations:
- Protection: “ I am protected”
- Stress: “I am at peace”
- Spirituality: “I am connected to the flow of intuition”
- Sleep: “I fall asleep easily”
- The Mind: “I am focused and my mind is clear”
I go into more detail about programming crystals here.
Benefits Of Wearing Amethyst
Wearing healing crystal jewelry like amethyst has many benefits. Wearing an amethyst crystal bracelet causes it to interact with your body’s energy field, aura and/or chakras all day long.
Crystals vibrate at different energetic frequencies depending on their shape, color and what they’re made of. If we wear the crystals or place them near us or on our bodies they’re energy can have an impact on our energy field.
Wear an amethyst crystal bracelet when you’re out running errands for protection from unwanted energy.
Hold an amethyst mala during meditation to keep your mind from wandering and to connect to your intuition.
Amethyst Crystal Shapes And What They Mean
Amethyst Geodes and Clusters
Geodes and clusters are the raw form of Amethyst. They’re found in caverns or basalt flows, vugs or voids where there was an air pocket. Clusters are naturally occurring groups of crystal points connected to the same base with points extending in every direction.
The large geodes are known as cathedrals, because they look like big steeples and are often cut in half to display the crystals inside.
If they’re really small, they’re called a druze or druzy. Druzy have become very popular lately. They’re really small and sparkly and common in jewelry.
Geodes are really great for living spaces because their energy can diffuse into a large space. They make the space feel good, and add a calming vibe to it. I have one in my office and it helps me feel focused, clear minded and calm.
Use geodes and clusters in a space where you want its calming energy.
Amethyst Points
Crystal points refer to a point on one or both ends. These can happen naturally or they can be carved into shape. These are great for use in crystal grids because the wide end of the point gathers energy while the narrow point directs the energy.
Grids are crystals placed in groupings of sacred geometric shapes to direct energy to an intention. You can also use points to gather and direct energy in a room or space.
Amethyst Wands
Wands are carved cylindrical shapes with a point and a flat or rounded end. They’re used in meditation practice to direct energy to chakras, they can be used in reiki to direct energy and other energy work.
Amethyst Spheres
Spheres are a common shape you can find crystals in. Crystals carved into a rounded shape are good for diffusing energy and harmonizing and balancing a space.
Besides these shapes, there are many more shapes you can find amethyst carved into. You can find them tumbled and polished, carved into animal shapes and shaped into beads for jewelry. Choose what your drawn to or what your intuition tells you.
How To Care For Your Amethyst Healing Crystal Jewelry
Caring for amethyst is easy. It’s relatively durable, but there are a few things I would avoid doing to keep it in top shape.
- Don’t leave it out in direct sunlight or it may fade. When you’re not wearing it, place it on a selenite crystal plate to cleanse it’s energy or in a jewelry bag or box out of direct sunlight.
- Avoid wearing it in the shower, swimming pool or hot tub. The chlorine can make it fade and the elastic on the bracelet break if you’re wearing an elastic crystal bracelet. Also, you don’t want soap residue on it either. It can make it dull.
- To clean it, use a microfiber cloth and gently rub it until it shines.
- Cleanse and charge your crystal jewelry in the full moonlight, on a selenite plate or with cleansing smoke to keep its energy vibrating high.
Amethyst is one of my favorite crystals because it has so many benefits. I keep a geode in my office for a clear mind and to focus, an amethyst point on my nightstand to help me sleep and I wear it often to protect myself from negative energy.
Was amethyst one of your first crystals too? Let me know in the comments below.
